Frequently Asked Questions
1. How long do Saint Bernards live?
Saint Bernards have a life span of around 8-12 years if there are no major medical issues.  A few saints we have known have lived past 12 years old.

2. Is there such thing as a dry mouth Saint?
There is no such thing as a dry mouth Saint Bernard. All will drool, some more than others. Saint Bernards do not drool all day long, but usually when eating, drinking, and panting during hot weather.

3. How much do Saint Bernards weigh?
Saint Bernards do vary in weight.  Bitches weigh between 100-160 lbs.  Dogs weigh between 120-180 lbs.  Only in rare instances will you see a lean healthy Saint weighing over 200 lbs.  Most over 200lbs are just really fat.

4. Are there different types of Saints?
Yes.  Two varieties of Saints exist.  Long haired or rough coated and short haired or smooth coated.  We think both are beautiful and each variety highlights the breed.

5. Do Saint Bernards eat a lot?
Yes, but not as much as you might think.  Saints will eat 4-8 cups of food a day.  Often a growing puppy will eat more food than a full grown adult.

6. Do Saints need a lot of space?
Yes and no.  Lots of yard space is always good for any breed of dog, but just because Saints are large doesn't mean they need many acres of land to run.  Saints are a medium energy dog that likes to play for a while then are perfectly content sleeping for a few hours.  Though not recomended for apartment living, they do not have the high energy of many sporting breeds.  An average size yard will be plenty of room for them.

7. Do Saint Bernards shed a lot?
Sorry but yes.  Cleaning up hair is a large part of owning a Saint.  Once or twice a year they will blow their coat meaning large clumps of dead hair will shed from them.  It can be quite a lot.  You just have to be prepared to clean up hair all year long.

8. Where can I find out more about Saint Bernards?
The Saint Bernard Club of America website www.SBCA.com is a great source of information regarding the breed.  Many books and publications have also been written about these gentle giants.
